Accident May 1, 2011

May 1, 2011
----------------

There was a very serious accident on Highway 92 about one block East of County Line Road.

I heard from a neighbor that someone was traveling over 100 mph caused the wrecked.

And several people had died.

There wasn’t anything in the news about this.

I wrote the newspaper to try and get an answer.

Hi,
I don't know any details. I forwarded your message to our metro editor to ask if she knows anything.
Gary

.     The May 1, 2011 fatal accident on New Tampa Hwy. remains silent from media and public awareness.
.     There were 3 to 7 people killed and possibly 8 from what I heard.
If 7 people were killed, then it would be equal to the Polk County record for most people killed in a single crash.
If 8 people were killed, then it would be the worst wreck in Polk County records.
Why is this very deadly crash unreported?

Michael,
Unfortunately I can not find anything regarding a fatal accident on Highway 92 on May 1, 2011.
I searched both our newscasts and assignment file and could not locate any information.
As the photos in your blog show, there were Florida Highway Patrol troopers at that scene.
You can contact the Polk FHP office to receive an accident report.

On March 11, 2014 I spoke to a man who saw the wreck.
This witness was at the scene and remembers people died from the wreck but didn’t remember how many.

There was an accident on September 4, 1994 that is currently the deadliest in Polk County history.

Mr. Willis was driving his truck south on County Line Rd.

A car with 6 people inside was traveling north at a high speed on the same road.
The car hit a bump and went out of control.
Then crossed into the southbound lane and hit the truck Mr. Willis was driving.
The impact cause both vehicles to split into.
Part of the car ended near the cemetery.
A nurse arrived at scene and discovered two people were still alive.
They died later at the hospital. All 7 people were killed.
All but 2 were buried at the cemetery near the crash.

  Raymond D. Willis

The main victim in this accident.

  1. That 5/1/11 accident. I've seen your comments on news websites requesting info. I see in the pictures it's FHP. You can call the local hwy patrol in that area, give them the date, and location and they can provide you with the report #. Since its been well over 60 days the report is public information and it would only cost you 10 maybe 20 dollars to obtain. I've seen your comments many times and so it sparked my interest, I tried searching obituaries around that date and news reports and couldn't find anything either. A friend of mine remembered the accident as well without me giving a lot of info they immediately remembered it was near the train tracks and we're under the impression the cars had gone off the road and we're not located until several hours later.

  2. Even I was following this case but then lost track of it as got busy with other things. When I was working with a Los Angeles DUI lawyer, there was a famous saying that highway 92 has become infamous for deaths almost every year in almost similar tragic manner.
